Check With Insurer Before Going Solar
You have installed solar panels on your house. You are doing your part for the environment while taking advantage of government incentives to invest in renewable energy. But did you check with your homeowners insurance carrier before you did your part to save the planet?
More and more, homeowners are finding that putting those solar panels on their roof is resulting in a notice of cancellation from their insurance carrier. Many insurance carries do not cover solar panels. Some say the panels compromise roofs. Other claim that solar systems with net metering connections to utilities pose a risk of injury to line workers and can damage the utility grid. Another reason circulating is that net metering turns them into commercial utilities, disqualifying them for the homeowners policy.
Of course, some more skeptical consumers feels carriers are simply using solar panels as an excuse to shed polices in the state. Some of these companies are under order to lower their overall exposure in the state.
Regardless of the reason these solar consumers are finding themselves uninsured, it is strongly advised to contact your insurance carrier before you invest in the future.
